From slop — swill poured without looking, by extension any food served without care. The term took hold around 2024, modelled on spam, to name mass generative output.
Definition
Content produced at scale by a generative model and published with no editorial intent or review, whose value to the reader is nil or negative. What defines slop is not the tool but the absence of anyone answering for it: a text written with a model, then checked, cut and signed, is tooled work. Slop has no author — only a sender.
Example
Pulitzer produces forty definitions overnight to cover a semantic field. Thirty-eight are accurate, well turned, and teach no one anything. The editorial jury rejects them as a block — not for their quality, which is good, but because none survives the question: what does a reader find here that is not elsewhere? Two pass, and are signed.
